The Defining Moment
Some call it “The Day of Disgust.” I call it “The Defining Moment.” Whatever you call it, you must have had that “day” or that “moment” where you took a long, hard look in the mirror, deep into your eyes and said something like, “For things to change, I have to change and for things to get better, I have to get better.”
When I sit down and talk with each one of my clients before they begin a fitness and nutrition journey with me, I make sure we talk about their “defining moment.” At this point, I can determine how serious they are about their goals and what price they are willing to pay to get there.
Getting healthy doesn’t happen overnight; rather it is a series of choices that we make every day, every hour. Understanding that we are constantly moving in a certain direction is so important. There’s no such thing as treading water in this case. We are either moving toward better health and wellness or away from it with every decision that we make.
If you’ve had that “defining moment” you may have caught yourself not always making the right decisions, but the difference is that you stayed determined. You fell off the horse, but you got right back on. If you have found yourself making a small mistake and then wanting to throw the towel in, maybe you haven’t had your defining moment yet and that’s okay.
Real change happens when you get serious, when you tell yourself that nothing is going to stop you from getting there. You feel a passion and burning desire to succeed and reach your goals. You understand that you’re not perfect, but you will do your best every day. You will exercise choices that move you toward the person you want to be. You will not let anyone discourage you, because you are certain it’s what you want.
Examine your life today and the choices you are making. Perhaps you thought you had a defining moment years ago, but slowly the feeling faded and you returned to your old habits.
Your defining moment can’t be forced. It must come deep from your heart and have a strong “why” attached to it. Remember that it’s never too late to start, but it’s always too late to wait.
Have you had your “defining moment?” If you have, I’d love to hear about it. Drop me a note at KAcedo34@yahoo.com
