When it comes to improving your mood, consider this strategy:
Sprinkle your calendar with social activities.
When we’re with our favorite friends and family, it puts us in a better mood, which will help us make better food choices, get a good night’s sleep, and find more will to exercise.
Part 2: FOOD – The “Telling Month” of October
Last week I emphasized that preparing for a healthy and happy holiday season doesn’t start in November; it starts in October.
So, in this 4-part series, I’m giving you one important (and totally doable) suggestion per week around each health habit you’ll want to stay on top of this month (Sleep, Food, Mood, and Exercise) that I hope you carry into the holidays.
Part 1: SLEEP – The “Telling Month" of October
Preparing for a healthy, happy holiday season doesn’t start in November; believe it or not, it starts now, in October.
As a matter of fact, I like to call October the “telling month” because you can “tell” a lot about how successful a person might be at managing their weight throughout the holidays based on how they “run” their October.
Lower Stress Using This Simple Tweak
We know that chronic stress can not only wreak havoc on our immune system causing us to catch colds more often, but that’s the least of one’s problems when stress levels are at a high constant.
How Washing the Dishes Can Bring Out the Best in You
I’ve never used a dishwasher.
At first, not by choice – we didn’t have one in the house I grew up in.
But everywhere I’ve lived since has had a dishwasher, and I’ve used it, but not in the conventional way; rather, I’ve found it to be a handy extra space to store my larger pots, pans, and muffin tins.
Be the Change You Wish to See… in Yourself?
At the beginning of each year, I create a theme (usually a word or short phrase) that I use to guide my focus and intention that year.
A few years ago, I chose the theme “World Class,” meaning that I would approach everything I did with a world-class mindset – from how I showed up to work every day, to the way I connected with my clients, to the content I created for my community (you!), and so on.
Downshift: The Importance of Regular Self-care Practices in Midlife
Not unlike a car that runs at high speeds for too long and too often, our bodies, if treated similarly, will too break down faster and will be more costly to repair.
As a result, in my membership community, the Theme I chose for this month was “Downshift,” based on the book we’re exploring: “The Blue Zones: 9 Lessons For Living Longer From the People Who Have Lived the Longest.”
Permission to Retreat: 5 Reasons to Get Away
Five years ago I chose to take a leap from a personal trainer helping my clients from the “outside-in,” to a wellness coach, guiding my clients toward positive change from the “inside-out.”
I enjoyed working on “shaping” my midlife clients’ bodies for 15 years as a trainer, but I knew they needed more from me.
An Alternative to Hating Your Body
I used to think public transportation was just for people who didn’t have a car…
I have a car, but I actually choose to take the bus occasionally!
Call me crazy, but sometimes it’s just more convenient for me – I don’t have to worry about finding parking, or worse yet, get into an accident (that’s my fault!).
Podcast Roundup
In everything I do, my aim is to inspire, educate, and empower you to greater health and self-care in your midlife years.
If you feel like you need some of that right now, you’re in luck because I rounded up all the podcasts I’ve been a guest on.
I don’t have my own podcast (yet), but if it’s something you’d find valuable on your journey through your midlife years, I’ll consider it (let me know).
