Do You Have a Pay It Forward Attitude?
To live a long, healthy life, I believe that one must develop a pay it forward attitude. Rarely will you see the results of healthy living immediately. It usually takes weeks, months, or even years, depending on what you are working on. On the other hand, when we choose not to have a pay it forward attitude about our health, we unfortunately see the repercussions.
I went to get a flu shot last week at a medical center. The pharmacy was buzzing with people waiting to get their medications. Along with those people was a man who could barely fit through the doorway because of his weight. He was on his way to the pharmacy to pick up what was sure to be a lot of medication. I’m going to assume that this man didn’t become obese overnight, but it took years and years and years to get to that point. I’m also going to assume that this man gained his weight by not considering the cost of his daily choices, and that is what brought him there that day.
You see, we live in a society where we want everything fast and convenient. Fast food, TV remote, E-mail, cars, Starbucks drive-thru, and medication are some examples. Yes, it’s a beautiful thing when our lives are made easier by way of convenience, but a lot of our conveniences end up being not so convenient in the long run.
Getting healthy takes time, discipline, hard work, and costs more money up front. Maybe you hire a wellness coach or a trainer. Perhaps you start buying higher quality food. Maybe you wake up fifteen minutes earlier every morning to cook yourself a healthy breakfast. Perhaps you head to the gym after work instead of straight home. Maybe you start playing with your grandkids at the park instead of watching TV when you see them. The list can go on and on depending on your situation.
Take a moment to examine your health and see where you have chosen convenience and price over the healthier choice in the long run. It’s hard to see the results immediately, and that’s why it’s hard to make the right choice right now. However, I promise that if you start to make healthier choices, even if they cost more and are less convenient right now, you won’t regret it in years to come.
