And last, but not least, I bring you Big Tip #5!

Big Tip #5: Keep Exercise Social

Keeping exercise social can have many benefits.

One of my previous clients met up with a friend every morning, rain or shine, for a power walk.

They did this at the same time, every morning, for 14 years – yes, 14!

Sure, they occasionally missed a day here and there because one of them was sick, but this was something they looked forward to every morning for 14 years.

I haven’t followed up recently about this, but I’m assuming (and hoping) they’re still going strong.

They got so much out of it:

  • Accountability – it was expected they’d show up every day for each other.
  • Connection – they used the time to talk and share with one another. Their kids even became friends.
  • And exercise, of course!

This is what to strive for when thinking of making exercise social.

Again, besides exercise, you get accountability – if you don’t show up, your friends will miss you and call or text you to see why you’re not with them.

You also get connection – bonding, sharing, and talking with other healthy women.

Imagine meeting up with friends a few times a week for an hour or even once a week to do something physically active.

Imagine the value that it brings to you and the value you bring to them when you show up too.

I can’t think of a healthier way to grow friendships, than to be physically active together.

If you currently don’t have healthy friends to meet up with for a walk, hike, bike, tennis, you name it, then consider doing some research.

If you like sports, you can join a rec league in your community.

There are usually different levels of competitiveness, based on what you’re looking for.

If you’re not a sports or competitive person, consider browsing through Meetup.com, where you’re bound to find people who are doing something active that you find interesting.

Maybe you already attend a regular yoga, Pilates, Zumba, indoor cycling, or some kind of fitness class, and you’re interested in making some new friends to do something outside of class with.

Perhaps after class one day you spark up conversation with someone you want to get to know better and see if they’re interested in getting a few other people together and try something outside of class that everyone might enjoy.

Sure, this can be uncomfortable – rejection is always a possibility, and if they do, it might just not be a good time for them right now, but I promise there are other women out there who are looking for you – trust me, I hear from them all the time!

You’re looking for each other, but someone has to make the first move – will it be you?

Who knows, you might just find a great walking buddy who over time becomes a great friend, just like my client’s.

Again, this whole series was about how to make exercise a part of your life for the rest of your life.

Implementing just one of the Big Tips is a great start and if all you can or want to do right now is just one of the five, that’s completely fine!

Choose the one you’re most likely to do immediately, even if it’s not the one you want to do most.

You can always build in the others over time.

My hope is that you tried one or some of them already, but if not, the time has come to pick something you’re likely to do this week.

Like with anything, it starts with a single step in that direction.

What’s the smallest action you can take?

I’m always here to help, because it’s not more information that’s lacking; it’s implementation.

That’s why I’ve made helping midlife women implement healthier self-care habits my thing.

Information is abundant, but implementation is scarce.

If you really want to reap the rewards of exercise and live a healthy and happy midlife and beyond, then you have to take action.

Again, I’m here to help. Just reach out.

I hope this series over the past several weeks has been helpful and inspired you to challenge yourself in new and exciting ways when it comes to exercise.

Most of all, thank you for making the commitment to yourself to pursuing greater health and self-care in your midlife years.

That’s my mission and purpose, and it’s an honor to be a part of that journey.

It’s your turn to take care of you,
