How to Find Adventure in Midlife
On my radio show Phenomenal 50’s, I recently interviewed my vibrant friend and avid blogger, Suzanne Stavert. Her popular blog among women in midlife is called Adventures of Empty Nesters. During our interview, she talked about how she stays healthy in midlife so that she can go on the adventures. Check out a part of our interview!
Adventures of Empty Nesters is really about making the BEST of this second half of life. Tell us more!
Adventures of Empty Nesters is a blog I started about 14 months ago. I found that many of the people I knew and friends of mine that had turned 50 and were transitioning to becoming empty nesters. Many of them were sort of lost, not really knowing what was next for them, while others were really enjoying this new stage of their lives and even starting new careers.
I wanted to create a place where we could all go and share what was happening in our worlds. So, I began writing about how I felt to be living in midlife and how I was coping. My husband and I were really trying to make the best of this second half of life. We did miss our children, and it is a HUGE adjustment when the house is now empty and the focus is no longer on their day-to-day adventures and activities. It was now our time – OUR time to put what we want first. I think we were doing a pretty good job and wanted to help others in the same situation
As a busy woman who obviously travels a lot as well, how to you stay healthy and fit?
Staying healthy is a number one priority, because how am I going to take these adventures if I am not feeling my best? I read everything I can about nutrition and follow what the health experts are saying. Since the kids have grown up, my husband and I got a rescue puppy named Rocco. Because he is a high-energy kind of dog, I have to walk him everyday, rain or shine, about 4 miles each day. We live near some great natural parks and our walks are a great time for me to get focused for my day. In addition to walking Rocco, I go to yoga, Pilates, and take exercises classes.
My husband and I try to eat as healthy as we can. We don’t eat fast food or drink sodas. When we are traveling, the choices are different. We usually stick to eating a large morning/lunch meal and then we have a smaller dinner. A lot of times we’ll split an entrée. However, I do think that part of the fun of visiting new places is eating the local food and trying great restaurants. So we’ll do that, but we also make sure we’re walking a lot and taking the stairs as often as we can.
As a social influencer, what message would you like to send to women in midlife?
What I want to say is GO FOR IT! This is now our time to do what we want and to enjoy life to the fullest. Try new things, go new places. It is time to take care of YOU – do those things that you never had time for before. Get a massage, go to the gym, learn a new skill, plan a trip, or try a new idea! I hope to inspire other women to get out there and utilize their talents and achieve new goals!
