Slow and Steady Wins the Healthy Race
The other day, I went to coffee to catch up with a woman I hadn’t seen in several years. The longer we sat, the more I saw her fidget. We were sitting on hard stools, so I understand that it wasn’t the most comfortable seat, but she was noticeably very uncomfortable. I know a large factor had to do with her weight.
As we continued to catch up on life while she continued to try to find a comfortable position, she stopped mid sentence, looked at me with the most honest look and said, “Kim, you look great. You haven’t aged. What do you do? What do you eat? How do you do it, Kim?”
I really thought carefully about my response. She was staring at me really curiously as she waited for me to “blow her mind”. After sitting there in silence as I reflected on what my response would be, what came out of my mouth was…
“You know, it’s really about making healthy choices everyday. It’s about making the time to exercise. It’s about planning ahead. It’s simply about understanding that the things we do or don’t do every single day add up over time and our health is a representation of how we’ve been using our days.”
I may not have offered her the “answer” or the “secret” that she wanted, but I gave her the truth – the truth is that when you realize that the clock is ticking and time is passing right before our eyes, we must live with a sense of urgency. If we don’t, we’re wasting our most precious days that could be spent moving toward looking, feeling, and performing better than we do now.
Look, we’re all getting older everyday. As we age, we naturally lose our health. But, we can fight back and remain healthy; however, it’s up to us to make that choice. My question to you is, “In your midlife years, are you willing to be patiently impatient while seeing slow and steady progress?”
Slow and steady progress is not easy and that’s why it’s so important that we have accountability, support, and guidance along the way. We need ALL three if we want to experience lasting change in our health.

Big headline from this post is: “the things we do or don’t do every single day add up over time and our health is a representation of how we’ve been using our days.” This is a fact. And cumulatively the choices we make show up in our health as we age. Period. Great post!
YES! You got the take-home message 😉 Thanks, Heidi!
