The 3 Things to Look For in a Role Model
You may be thinking, “Find a role model? At my age?”
My answer is yes. Role models can be helpful in many ways and at any age! When most people think of role models, they think of someone who may be out of reach. They may be thinking of someone who is so far ahead of them that they don’t even make the first step because they don’t believe they can ever get as far as that person.
Here’s what to look for in a role model:
- They must be similar, in a way that you can identify with them.
- They need to be individuals who have learned and lived new habits and behaviors that you aspire to have.
- They must be someone who stretches you, but doesn’t intimidate you.
You want to look for someone who you’re inspired by, more than impressed by. The closer you can identify with them, the better.
For example, let’s say you’re a divorced and recently retired woman who is looking to become more independent, make new friends, and start living a healthier life. Maybe you know of a woman who is also divorced and recently retired and you have noticed that she’s happier than ever – she always seems to look so put together, have her weekends full of activities with new friends, and you’ve even noticed that she has dropped a few pounds. She may be a good role model for you in this case.
Another example would be if you are a mom and full-time career woman who is not only trying to juggle spending time with your kids, significant other, and extended family and friends, you’re also trying to advance in your career. If that wasn’t enough to handle, you’re mostly frustrated because you have been saying that you want to lose 30 pounds for years now, but you just don’t see how you will be able to carve time out of your busy life to start exercising regularly and cooking healthier meals. Let’s say you know of a woman who is similar in age to you and she is also a full-time mom, a working woman, and seems to work out regularly as well as eat healthy, fresh meals. Additionally, you just found out that she is also taking a class for fun at the local community college! How does she do it all, you may ask?! She may be a great role model for you.
The next step after you have identified a role model would be to talk to them! Invite them out for coffee or lunch or even just a quick chat on the phone would do. Tell them why you are reaching out to them and tell them that you are inspired by what they are able to accomplish. Tell them that you feel like you are on a similar path and would like to know the first step they took to get where they are. In other words, ask them how they got started and go from there!
