The Athlete Called You (Part 2)

Welcome to Part 2 of “The Athlete Called You” in honor of Black History Month. I am sharing with you the last five of my top 10 Favorite Quotes from some of the greatest African-American female athletes of all time (in no particular order). After each quote, I leave you a few challenging questions so that YOU can bring out your inner athlete.

Please work on these 5 quotes – journal about them, share with a friend, post them on Facebook, etc.

VENUS WILLIAMS, one of the all-time greats in women’s tennis

“Some people say I have attitude – maybe I do…but I think you have to. You have to believe in yourself when no one else does – that makes you a winner right there.”
– Even if no one believed in you, would you still believe in yourself?

GAIL DEVERS, Three-time Olympic Gold medalist in Track & Field

“Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember, all things are possible for those who believe.”
– Reaching your goals requires faith, belief, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Which of these areas could use some strengthening?

SERENA WILLIAMS, currently #1 in women’s tennis

“If anything, you know, I think losing makes me even more motivated.”
– When you “lose,” do you feel defeated and ready to quit? Or, do you pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and plan to WIN the next day?

WILMA RUDOLPH, USA gold medalist in track and field

“Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us.”
– Greatness lives inside of you; however, greatness is in a constant battle with comfort. In what ways are you willing to be uncomfortable in order to achieve your health goals?

“Believe me, the reward is not so great without the struggle.”
– Victory is most rewarding when you’ve worked hard for it. Imagine how you’ll feel when you accomplish your goals all due to the daily effort you put in, even when you didn’t feel like it or obstacles continued to come your way. How will you feel when you finally emerge VICTORIOUS?

Did this list empower you to bring out your inner athlete?
Which quote was your favorite and why?

Wishing you joyful health in your 50’s,
