The Gift Only You Can Give Yourself on Mother’s Day
If you’re a person someone calls Mom today, I hope you’re showered with love and appreciation, not just today, but every day.
But did you know that the greatest gift you can receive on Mother’s Day is something that no one else can give to you?
Yeah, that’s right – you can only give this gift to yourself.
That gift is the commitment to life-long self-care.
Again, life-long – not wishy-washy, half-in, half-out self-care…
Not self-care only when it’s convenient, or practical, or affordable…
Rather life-long self-care is a commitment, a discipline, a ritual.
No one can make you take care of yourself; rather self-care requires you to give yourself permission to nurture yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally.
But why do we often find this so hard?
I think it’s because it requires receiving, and culturally we’ve been conditioned to believe that giving more and receiving less is somehow honorable as a woman.
A life-long commitment to self-care also requires us to believe that we are worth it – worth having emotionally healthy friends, worth the time, worth the money, worth the extra effort.
And be sure to not mistake self-worth or self-care with self-ish.
Self-worth simply means you value yourself, which remember, has nothing to do with how much you value others.
Self-care means taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally, and if you’ve been with me for some time, you’ll know that I believe self-care is far from being self-ish; rather it’s one of the most generous acts you can do for your kids who love you and are emotionally and financially invested in your future.
If you love them too, even though they’re grown now, your job as their mom hasn’t stopped; it’s just changed.
They still need you to take care of YOU.
But look, don’t do it just for them.
If you do it just for them, you slide back into “giving” mode.
No, no.
Do it also for you.
Do it also because you value yourself.
Do it also because you value your future.
Do it also because your time’s not up yet – there’s still so much to do, see, experience, learn, love, and explore – not just “out there,” but inside you as well in this beautiful time of midlife.
Happy Mother’s Day!
