What to Buy (and not buy) Organic in 2019

If I put two of the same type of apple in front of you, one organic and the other not, could you tell which one is organic?

I’ve found that with certain produce you can, but most of the time you can’t.

So then, at the grocery store we’re often faced with a dilemma: we need to buy apples.

The organic apples look the same as the non-organic apples, but the only difference seems to be the price.

The organic option costs more, but if they look the same, why spend an extra dollar to buy the organic?

Ever wonder what’s worth buying organic and what’s not worth the extra cost?

The first thing to know is that you don’t always have to choose the organic option, but there are certain fruits and vegetables that are worth spending that extra dollar or two on, even if you can’t “see” the difference between the two types.

Once a year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) releases their Dirty Dozen List – the 12 fruits and vegetables that are the “dirtiest,” meaning they contain the highest concentration of pesticides (AKA harmful chemicals farmers use to keep the pests away), as well as a “Clean 15” – the 15 produce items that are the “cleanest” and therefore you don’t need to buy organic.

Sure, you can buy ALL your produce organic – it does support organic farming, but if nothing else, for the sake of your health, consider spending a few dollars more to buy these 12 items organic.

  1. Strawberries
  2. Spinach
  3. Kale
  4. Nectarines
  5. Apples
  6. Grapes
  7. Peaches
  8. Cherries
  9. Pears
  10. Tomatoes
  11. Celery
  12. Potatoes

If you go to the EWG’s website, you can download and print out a beautiful list of the Dirty Dozen that you can take with you to the grocery store.

The EWG also releases an annual “Clean 15” list, which are, again, the 15 produce items that you don’t have to buy organic.

Here they are:

  1. Avocados
  2. Sweet corn
  3. Pineapples
  4. Sweet peas (frozen)
  5. Onions
  6. Papayas
  7. Eggplant
  8. Asparagus
  9. Kiwi
  10. Cabbage
  11. Cauliflower
  12. Cantaloupe
  13. Broccoli
  14. Mushrooms
  15. Honeydew melon

Like the Dirty Dozen list, you can also download and print out a beautiful copy of the “Clean 15” for 2019.
